MVP Candidates

Let's get this board going. Been too quiet lately...

I know there's a couple guys out there thay deserve to be in this conversation so I'm not going to run through everyone. I'll throw out my top candidates and let you vie for yours.

Here's the thing... My nomination for overall MVP isn't someone who I just believe has been those Most Valuable Player to their team but someone who I honestly believe is the best player in the league top to bottom.

it's no surprise by my vote goes to Sam Thomas. I've watched and played with Sam for more than a decade now. Game after game, week after week, year after year, the guy gets double and triple teamed and still does whatever he wants to teams. He is constantly getting his steady 6 to 12 grabs per game and generally averages around 100 yards per game. To date he has 36 grabs (tied for first), 534 yards (3rd), and 10 tds (tied for first). And what's most impressive to me is his innate ability to get yards AFTER the catch. And what's even better is that EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG knows the ball is going his way. And that's just offensively. Sam is also a punt and kickoff return man, PAT and punt long snapper, oh... And last week he has a handful of tackles on defense during the handful of plays he played. Dude is a baller and there's no way around it.

But what is more impressive than all of this is his unrelenting willingness to do what was best for the team. He's constantly saying things like "use me as a decoy here" and "let's do whatever it takes to score." The kid doesn't have a mortal enemy. He's friends with everyone in this league and I think it's fair to say that everyone in this league respects Sam's skills.

Is Sam a one man show? Absolutely not. There's a lot of great players on the Stealth that help pave the path. But I'll tell you this...He's going up against the best teams in the league week in and week out (unlike some of the other people putting up big numbers) and he continues to be a dominant factor in every game.

So again, while I know there's other people deserving of nominations... Especially for Offensive MVP... I'm not so sure anyone deserves to be in the conversation for overall MVP as much as Sam does just because of all the ways he helps our team. And I'll just say it would be a crying shame for Sam not to be an overall MVP candidate and potential winner.

Side note...how about that 48 year old Jeff Wissler??! Dude is having himself a year. Heck, this could be the best he's looked his whole career. Mad props Wiss. Proud to be your teammate brother.

Final votes for me (yes, I know they're all Stealth guys but you can't imagine their value to us and their numbers stack up incredibly well against the rest of those in the league)

Defensive MVP- CJ Ubani (29.5 tackles, 5 interceptions) - I'll go out on a limb and say CJ is the best corner in the league. Always plays heads up, is extremely quick, and understands the defensive strategy in a way that allows him to manipulate coverages and lure guys into throwing his way.

Offensive MVP- Jeff Wissler (59.1% completion percentage [4th in the league], 1654 yards passing [1st in the league], 19 TD's [1st in the league], 5 INT's, QBR of 116.5 [1st in the league])

Overall League MVP- Sam Thomas (36 receptions (tied for first), 534 yards (3rd), and 10 tds (tied for first)

I would probably go with Misi Tupe as overall mvp. Sam Thomas or Wissler for offensive mvp. And in defense there isn't really a statistical guy running away with it so I would have to homer the pick with Mike Messinger.  He is in the top of more than one statistical board and he is our most consistent defensive player but like I said there are a handful of guys who are in the mix in statistics which is how I would pick.

Misi Tuple for overall?

37/94 completions,
39.4 QB percentage
62.5 QB Rating
693 passing yards
8 passing TD's
7 int's.

Jeff Wissler

101/171 completions
59.1 QB percentage
116.4
1654 passing yards
19 passing TD's
5 int's

Even if you dad Misi's rushing stats with his passing, Wissler still has him beat on total yards and total TD's.

But his team is currently undefeated and without him probably wouldn't be. Maybe if you guys shut him down and beat them when you play then again he won't be but right now that is one of the top stats.

Exactly. Couldn't agree more. And for all that is good in this world I'm praying for a REV win.

I agree Wissler is a much better passing QB than Misi, but Misi is the leading the league in rushing yards by more than 100 yards, his team is undefeated and he has made some great plays to win games.  I certainly think you need to consider Misi for one of the MVP's

There are still 2 more games for players to make their statement.

I think players that should be considered for MVP in AAA are (in no particular order):

QB - Wissler, Jurasek, Tupe, and possibly Peterson depending on how he finishes the season, hes going to have a hard time because of his interceptions, but a QB that wins the league is hard to argue about.

RB - Misi Tupe - I know he isn't a RB, but he really is.

Rec - Thomas, Taylor

Defense - This is a little harder, but based on stats:

Bates(Generals), Robinson(Stealth), Messinger(Sting), Tupe(Rev)- just because Tupe is always in this conversation.

My pick is Sam Thomas for overall, but I may be a bit biased  ;)

Eteuati is very good, but I don't think he has the TDs needed to be MVP.  It will probably hold him back the same way interceptions will hold back Peterson.  I'd love to have Bryant on my team though.

It seems there are enough teams in AAA this year that the league should name a 1st and 2nd all-conference team. I realize they won't play anyone, but it would still be an honor for the players to be named.

I'd say Bryant Eteuati overall MVP, Charlie Peterson offensive MVP, Levine Tupe defensive MVP, Jeremy Williams coach of the year, Toby Christensen comeback player of the year, Golden Whetman leave and comeback player of the year, Ryan Lang utility player of the year, Steve Hansen Lineman of the year, Parker Manning rookie of the year, Solo Toala after game celebrations of the year, and Layton Christian as home field of the year (did I miss anything??)! lol Who cares about any of these personal awards? I promise all our guys only want 1 thing just like I'm sure Misi and anyone else in the conversation care about 1 thing. Go Rev!

Why comment if you don't?

It's fun to be the best--whether it's as a team or an individual. Sports fans care about that. Competitors care about that.

@Footballfan5

Sports fans also care about whether you put up the right info or not, such as how you put the Rev as 5-2 next to Levine's name which is wrong.

If we throwing out crazy info, might as well put Dixie's summer loss from the AA Vegas Trojans on their record making them 7-1 or how 'bout the Sting's preseason lost to make them 7-2?

How you expect anyone to take your comments seriously if you putting up wrong information?

Interesting comment anonymous footballfan5. I was just pointing out our record is 6-1 not 5-2. I'm not much of a competitor but all I care about is winning a ship. All I was saying. No need to get all butt hurt. Thanks for the input though!

Rumor has it Sam Thomas went off in Montana on Saturday with somewhere in ballpark of 200 yards and close to 10 grabs with 2 touchdowns on a pretty stellar Blaze defense. The real players show up in the playoffs fellas. Excited to see this matchup between rev and stealth as well as Eteuati and Thomas this Saturday.

I can second that. Sam was ballin' on Saturday. I'm not sure how many grabs he had but he did have 193 yards receiving and 2 TD's with some serious YAC's. I'm still convinced he's the MVP.

YAC? The Rev has film on Eteuati that would make everyone recepted YAC's laughable.

Where are Thomas PR & KR stats.

Talk about Overall.

Everyone who had proposed someone had recommended them on a singular category.

Misi with his rushes.

Thomas with his receptions.

Bryant had put up significant stats on every side of the ball besides defense.

Eteuati is the Overall MVP, it's not even an argument.

With all due respect to Eteuati, who btw I think is a baller, he doesn't even show up in the top stats in either punt returns or kick returns because he hasn't had enough attempts. In fact, when the season ended he only 4 punt returns total. Yeah, he made the most of his chances and people kick away from him but Sam is back there all the time as well on both KR and PR and people kick away from him. So when it comes down to it, Sam's help with long snapping, punt returns, and kick returns is just as valuable as Bryant's. That's why we focus on receiving stats. Because it's the difference maker in this discussion. Sam's overall touchdowns are more than Eteuati (12 tds for Thomas and 9 for Eteuati--- including Eteuati's PR's and KR's).

The fact is that people probably kick away from both these guys from a special teams point of view and the argument could absolutely be made that teams kick more away from Bryant. But there is no doubt that teams, from a defensive standpoint, prep more for and double and triple team Sam more than they do Bryant. No question about that. And Sam still puts up top numbers in the league and beats teams week in and week out.

I can appreciate the fact that you're battling for your boy as am I but there's no way you can say there isn't a question about who the overall should go to. Both guys are ballers and both have put up crazy numbers and had stellar seasons. I'm just convinced the award should go to Thomas.

Is the Overall MVP between Bryant and Sam?

I have a question: Are Eteuati's punt return TDs more important to the team than Thomas' receiving TDs?  It seems to me that 3 more TDs is three more TDs no matter how you get them.

Bryant does have move receptions and yards than Thomas, but I think Vincent has a valid point.  Who on the Rev, are more teams worried about: Mapson or Eteuati?  I think most teams until late in the year, were more concerned with Mapson, and game planned to stop him, so Bryant benefited.

I also  know that Thomas has returned several kicks and punts and has about a 25 yard average on punt returns, he also deep snaps on punts and field goals, is on almost all special teams plays, he has played some defense and even has a sack. Is there a player on any other team that helps his team is so many ways? He does what is needed to help his team.

Also, if we are only talking about TDs then Elgin-Taylor from the Blaze should be considered, he has 13 TDs and from what I have seen he is a big play guy too.

I think Misi Tupe also needs to be considered, he is dangerous, leads the league in rushing and has made some big plays to win games.  His team was tied for 1st at the end of the season.  Wissler and Peterson should also be considered.  Wissler has the highest QB rating and no one has been hotter than Charlie in the last half of the year.

The cool thing is we can watch a head to head comparison between Thomas and Eteuati this Saturday at 2pm at Christian Layton Academy.  It should be a great game to watch.

Bryant is top in KR and PR. In top 20 PR, there arent even 20 players listed. The stat page is messed up.

And Vincent is the OC, he favors Thomas on the field. Of course you would throw thomas in the mix when you go to him all the time. And Thomas' PR & KR stats aren't even close to Eteuati.

First, I want to say.  I think Bryant would be a great Overall MVP and may even deserve it.

Second, you say Vincent is the OC and favors Thomas, but you're Eteuati's team mate, it seems you (Phynn) have the same type of bias towards Bryant that Vincent has for Thomas.

Third, Bryant is the top punt returner and that makes him valuable I agree, but is it more important than having a deep snapper.  I wonder how may games the Rev would have won without someone to deep snap. Just saying.

Fourth, I like to stir things up a bit.

Didn't Thomas still have 3 more Overall TDs than Eteuati even with the punt returns? and Elgin-Taylor returned punts, kickoffs, had a return for a TD and had more Overall TDs than either Thomas or Eteuati.

I think having Thornton win last year messed up what Overall MVP means anyway.  It should be the most outstanding player, not the most well rounded.  Last year Thomas had by far the best year of any player (Check out the Stats posted in Charlies post in support of Bryant in the other thread), but Matt beat him out for Overall because he also played defense and Special teams adequately. Thornton wasn't the best in any category. Did that make him more valuable than Thomas, maybe, the people that voted thought so.  Don't get me wrong, Matt is a great player and could be in this conversation if the Shock had won more games.

So if Overall MVP means the player that does the most stuff for a team, then Thomas, Eteuati or maybe even Thornton(stats similar to last year, except TDs) should win.  If Overall MVP is the Most Outstanding Player than the field is wide open.

I don't think that the OVERALL MVP has to be someone that does everything. It should be the guy that if removed from their team would leave a HUGE hole in what they have accomplished or how you prepare for them.

STEALTH minus SAM?
REBELS minus MISI?
REV minus BRYANT?

What team would be worse off?

It should be who effects the game the most, but its hard to quantify.  If a defense wants to shut a guy down, they can, but someone else will probably have a big game.  If a team game-planned to shutdown Bryant by triple teaming him and left Mapson single covered on the other side and Mapson had 200 yards and 3 TDs. Who was more valuable?

The guy with the best stats isn't always the most valuable, although he certainly can be.

I know the Shock did just that to Sam when they played the Stealth the first game, but Ty West had 197 yards and 2 TDs and the Shock lost.  Was Sam less valuable because he didn't have the catches and TDs? I don't know, but he effected the game by just being on the field.

Sam has been doubled and triple-teamed every game which has opened up other players on the Stealth team. He still has pretty good stats, but they are down from last year because the other teams are much more focused him.   Bryant will get the same treatment next year, its already happening on punts.

I don't know who will win overall MVP, but I know there are several players that are deserving.  I hope it is Sam.  I do know that the Stealth/Rev game this weekend will be great to watch.  Everyone will be able to see some great players compete.

Good luck to both teams, but better luck to the Stealth.  Go Stealth!!!

Comparison of Bryant Eteuati and Sam Thomas against common opponents.  Common opponents are: Each other, Blaze, Rebels, and Shock

Bryant - 7.4 catches per game, 126.6 yards per game, .75 TDs per game. (Bryant played against Rebels twice)

Sam - 6.6 catches per game, 108 yards per game, 1.0 TDs per game. (Sam played against Shock twice)

In the Rev/Stealth game on April 19 Score Rev 30 - Stealth 28:

Bryant - 5 catches 59 yards 0 TDs, no punt or kickoff yards

Sam - 9 catches 126 yards, 1 TD, no punt or kickoff yards
