IDEAS FOR 2016
Permalink

I think we should have a THREAD for ideas going into the 2016 season so maybe we can start to put things in place. Here are my ideas. I don't need to tell anyone to pick them apart because I"m sure you will. At least TRY to be constructive and let's TRY to find a better way to do things without KILLING EACH OTHER. These may not be feasible or even possible but I just thought I would start the discussion.

 1) I think ONLY teams that are affected by a situation should vote on it. Especially when allowing teams into the league. Do Utah teams know or even care if a new team from Idaho pops up? We have no idea how it affects the other teams nor do we know the person. I have no problem with the Loco Express and what they've done in and for the league BUT that team sort of destroyed a team that ALSO did things the right way. I think it would lower the number of votes therefore making it harder to get in. You may have 8 Idaho teams that vote and 4 vote each way but then you have 8 Utah teams (that don't care) all vote yes and it makes it a 12-4 vote when really we may want to look into it. Maybe only have the other state(s) vote in case of a tie. Just an idea.

2) Limit roster size from the beginning of the season.....GAME 1. If you pick a new guy up, you have to cut someone and allow those guys to join another team. Make teams have to cut guys rather than creating a 60 man roster with 20 guys that will not see the field.....at least in the AAA. If a team can only have 40 players, they cannot afford to stash players (and just use them for the 3 games that are competitive). Those players can jump ship and probably help another team be more competitive. A second string Lions player may be a starter for the Cobras which could help them be more competitive. A second string Mustangs player may be able to start for the Guardians and help make them a better team. Allow AA teams to have an unlimited roster so the guys that can't make a AAA team can go play there and make those teams better. That is the only way to create parity and even competition in a league where guys can play wherever they want to. If we really want to be more competitive across the board than we have

3) Charge league fees based on the division you join. AAA pays the least because they are probably more organized and create less headaches......HOPEFULLY! They should also represent the league the best and be "WHO WE ARE" as a league so they should receive something for that.

4) We should go back to having an "After The Season" meeting so we can at least bring up some points that will be addressed so GMs can talk about them throughout the off-season via email or a separate forum or something. Sometimes it's hard to recruit when you really don't know

Problem with #2 is that geographically it really doesn't work. You make the example of a 2nd string Lionzzz guy being good enough to start for the Cobras. But that isn't likely to happen. Very few dudes in St George are going to want to play in the SL Valley (or worse, don't you guys play in Davis County?). There's a good chunk of teams in the league that have the players they have because of their location. There aren't many other options for a guy in Billings to play for anyone else than the Locos, etc.

I was just using the Lions as an example because they are a power 3. I guess i could have used the REV there. I know it's not an IDEAL situation or solution but in Salt Lake City, we are all within 15 miles of each other. I don't know about the Idaho proximity but it was just trying to get something out there.

Idaho proximity is pretty dismal. The two closes teams (Mustangs and Anarchy) are about 20 minutes from each other, which isn't so bad, except that the Anarchy probably won't be in the league next year, as they probably won't get voted back in. The next closest team to the Mustangs are the Diggers, about 1.5 hrs away, the Bulldawgs 2.5 hrs away... So to kick a guy off the team because we found someone better, doesn't workout for that guy very well. Plus most teams in this league, just add whoever will pay their fees. And that money gets spent pretty quickly. So if we kick that guy off, the team then has to give him his money back, try to get his jersey back, and if he is lucky enough to find a AA team that will take him in, he has to buy new pants, and re-paint his helmet... It doesn't really work out too well to have to cut one guy, to add another.

A couple years ago, before the ICFL took some of our teams, and the Vikings were still around, and the Mustangs were AA that might have worked. But not anymore.

well i'm not sure #2 is really a problem in those areas except trying to get more players to teams like the guardians, (if they're in the league). i don't know if those teams are stacked out there. but i do see your point with all that. thanks for the input. it's always good to get the ball rolling and at least try to come up with some solutions.

I don't know about anyone else... but looking at this divisional split in the photo attached.  There is truly only one team I even care to travel and Play.  And that's Laurel.

You take Laurel out of the equation, and that leaves a 7 team league(if the stealth fold), primed for an 8 game season (playing 1 team twice), with only 1 team missing the playoffs.  Most likely NO TEAMS forfeiting, and travel is minimal all around.  I do not see the Matadors, Mustangs, Anarchy, Great Falls or Gallatin making a strong enough push for the Southern 7 teams to even consider..... UNLESS we want to get rid of the Playoff Conference split scenario and let the best 8 in the playoffs at the end.  So.....Still have conferences, but get rid of the silly split playoff BS.

Otherwise NO JOKE, it makes more sense for the best teams (primarily housed in Utah) to revert back to playing eachother, save money on travel, more then likely guarantee a full schedule as teams being able to travel regardless of graduations or holidays or weddings is a non issue cause travel and proximity is so close.

Just my two cents...at this given point....
