First round of the playoffs in the books, the upset I was looking for in round one wasn't even close to happening, BUT there was a monster one that went down in Brigham.
Round One Recap / Predictions
Bulldawgs at Gladiators - Gladiators 28-20
Magic Valley went into Box Elder stadium last weekend and received a heavy dose of smash mouth football in their first ever game against the Sting. I went into this game feeling like the Sting were the better equipped playoff team all around. Now let me clarify that this is in no way a knock on the Bulldawgs in any way. I had the pleasure of catching this game in person and it didn't disappoint, depending on who you were pulling for. The Sting came out on fire and quickly took a 22-6 lead into halftime. They lived up to the reputation of a very capable offense and a smothering defense that most teams are going to hate to play on their home field. But halftime adjustments or not a completely different Bulldawgs team came out of the locker room. After the Bulldawgs cut into the lead with passing over the middle and precisely timed quarterback draws, both teams began to trade touchdowns. You could see the Sting defense attempting to counter the Bulldawgs passing attack the whole second half, but to no success. A few really big plays for the Bulldawgs and a few costly turnovers for the Sting late in the game and there you have it. Bulldawgs showed a lot of fight and I look forward to watching them play in person again. And don't get it twisted, there is something special brewing in Brigham, this game won't define them and they will be a force in this league for years to come.
The Bulldawgs are more then capable of pulling off an upset in this one, but I don't think they will. It will be competitive but I look for the Gladiators defensive front lines to cause problems for Travis Spring. The Bulldawgs can come off as one dimensional on offense and they can be predictable, but the difference maker they possess is that they execute properly. The Bulldawgs defense needs work and looked very inconsistent against the Sting. One minute it was a three and out and next it was players taking plays off and getting gashed up the middle for a big touchdown run. I would like to give a shout out to the injured Bulldawgs corner back, I don't know his name but it seemed as if his knee was going to fall off and he was able to tough it out for the majority of the game against some talented Sting receivers MAD RESPECT FOR BEING A WARRIOR FOR YOUR TEAMMATES. They will be facing a very consistent QB this week in Jurasek. I also look for Marshayne Haynes to have a big game catching the ball and the Gladiators advance to another RMFL AA Championship game. They are coming off of a comfortable victory against an Anarchy team that I thought might pull off the shocker. Clearly the Gladiators follow my posts because they definitely came to play.
Matadors at Generals - Matadors 20-17
I want to commend the Cobras for traveling short handed to Boise and holding the Generals to their second lowest scoring game of the year. I clearly didn't give them enough respect with my score prediction last week. I hear it was a sloppy game filled with turnovers and tough defensive stands. The Generals came out on top and that is all that matters to them. As for the Cobras they will be just fine in the Utah division as long as they retain their core group of players and that pesky QB. They will continue to be atop the Utah/Nevada Division and I look forward to watching the battles between them, the Oilers, and Sting. I didn't have any doubt that the Generals would come out on top here and I think they may have been overlooking the Cobras just a tad coming into this one.
I was so excited to see the outcome of these two teams playing the first time, and now we get a rematch to decide who will advance to play in the RMFL AA Championship game. Yes you see that prediction correctly. I picked the Matadors the first time, and I'm going for them again. If it wasn't for a monster goal line stand by the Generals I would be looking awful smart around these parts. I still can't help but to look at the Matadors defensive backfield as the difference maker in this one. You can say all you want that the Generals are not a one dimensional offense, and by no means do I intend to degrade their running back core, but Rhode threw over 40+ passes in their first game. Nuff said...I look for the Generals to struggle to run on the Matadors once again, so special teams and the passing attack will again be the difference. I think that the "DARKSIDE" has been given enough opportunity to game plan for this one, and they have been salivating for another shot at one they clearly feel slipped right through their fingers.

Speed, my man I appreciate the love, but to be honest I have a long way to go in my work. Next year I would like to be more familiar with more teams. I feel like I have a good handle on what I'm doing but I don't expect anything from anyone except comments on my work, nor did I start this with the expectations of any compensation. I started this because I have had a blast following the league and have for some years now. Because I love to write and about sports. I frequented the boards for years but never participated. I watched guys like Sarge, Hoop, Jess, Follower and others provide quality work over and over. Someday I can only hope to get on their level or even be mentioned with them. Until then I will do what I do and to the best of my ability. Overall it has been a positive response from people on here, I appreciate that.

A true gift, Turk. You should do it full time... 100% dedicated to just analyzing teams and providing predictions and game summaries. Don't bother with any distractions like playing or coaching (if you currently do or plan to, that is).

Yes, please Turk could you please "show love" to the Spartans. Thereby justifying their manipulated position of playing in the AA championship with a AAA roster. Never thought I would say this but GO Gladiators...I wonder how/if the Spartans celebrate their well earned victories... On a positive note first rate predictions Turk well done!

IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW THINK TWICE THE SUM OF ALL PARTS IS NOT ONE..
Why is the generals/spartans issue such a big thing still? From what I've heard, the Generals were allowed 10 players on their total roster. Get that... 10. Of those ten, i've heard 4 of them are either OL/DL. SO that leaves 6 previous Spartans that are skills players. Of those 6, there is 1 full time offensive WR. That now leaves us 5 Spartans on defense. We can argue about the "Wild Cam" on offense but that's another post.
So now that we've broken down the players, how are you arguing that according to the RMFL stat page, the #1 scoring offense in the AA division is STACKED WITH AAA SPARTAN talent?? Does that make sense??? Again this is just going off the stat page and people I know but it seems to me that this is not a huge issue. Is the Generals defense stout? Yes, but again their top tacklers is NOT a spartan!! It seems like the majority of their talent comes from defectors from the infamous "dark side" Matadors over the AAA Spartans.
Further more, is not the Great falls team a team that has jumped down from AAA last year??? So in theory, their ENTIRE ROSTER would have more previous AAA players than the Spartans.
MOVE ON PEOPLE!!! Maybe instead of pointing fingers at this so called STACKED Generals team we should instead criticize the lack of talent in the teams they play. cough cough Lancers and Guardians..I agree that the Generals will most likely be moving up to AAA next season.
Either way, this should be a great match up for the AA championship this weekend. I for one will be rooting for the Generals to bring the trophy home to Idaho.

So Turk when are you going to show the Generals some love?
Man where do I begin, first of all thank you Sidekick for the love. I still think your write ups are superior to mine because of the in depth knowledge you possess about each team you cover. As I stated I really intend to get much better next year in that department and have a better understanding of each team as the year goes on, I enjoy what I'm doing thats for sure.
Just Me: Let me say that I have immense respect for any player or team who puts on the pads and throws down in this league, no matter the team or the skill level. From the bottom of the league statistically to the top. As long as you play the game, and respect the game I have respect for you. As far as showing the Generals some love? I have and I haven't this year, I admit that I have waivered on it all season. But don't get me wrong I'm impressed with what they have accomplished this year, no matter who is on their roster. It should be a good game Saturday for sure. Keep an eye out for my prediction.
Dozer: I have even contributed to this arguement and stated my opinion and I do agree that its time to move on. Regardless of how anyone feels, what the Generals did this year and who they picked up was a legal thing and if it wasn't the league wouldn't have allowed it. So there is that. Secondly as much as I feel they should be in AAA next year which I fully expect them to be. The reality is that no one can take away what they have done on the field this year. They still had to strap up and go out and earn victories, no one is going to hand you one in this league. If they were losing no one would have a problem with them. But they aren't and it still doesn't matter to me, because I'm not going to take anything away from them, they are doing what they have to do to get it done on the field. Hell they could have ended up a mess like the Lakers this year but they didn't, they put in the work off the field and after watching their game with the Dors yesterday they were clearly prepared. They deserve to be where they are at, no matter the talent they possess.

Mr. Turkelton, Sir, Have enjoyed reading your predictions. You mention you saw the Generals-Matadors game Saturday. Were you there in person, or did you watch the webcast we did through the Matadors website. I did the play-by-play for the webcast. If you did watch the webcast, would appreciate any feedback about it, good, bad, or ugly. Thanks.

Yes I did watch the webcam. I was at work. It was great and accomplished its goal. I think my only critique would be the camera placement was a little far away but you can't really help that and I was still able to watch and see what I needed. Your commentary was very good as well. It sounded as if you were sitting next to the camera correct? Maybe next time figure out how to integrate your voice into the video feed a little better bc at times it was a little hard to hear you but a overall success in my book sir! Thanks for broadcasting it!
